alvor-nautic-explorationThanks to its positioning, the fishing town of Alvor offers a great blend of maritime history and modern-day beach fun, dating back some one thousand years it is closely linked to the sea.

For those who want to spend some time exploring the nautical history of the town they can go on something of a day-trip meant to allow them to experience and enjoy both of these aspect of Alvor.

You should start by visiting the Nucleao Etnografico located near the old railway station in Mexilhoeira Grande. This is where you’ll see a bunch of exhibits related to fishing and life in the larger Alvor estuary.

After that trip, which can be easily made with a rental car, you should return to the Alvor harbor, where you can visit the colorful fish market and a similarly or even more colorful collection of fishing and leisure boats.

This is also the place where you can board a small sea cruiser that will take you on a great trip along the shoreline, taking you westwards to Lagos. The boat will stay close to the coast and offer you some very eye-opening vistas with plenty of opportunities to admire sandy beaches and very particular rock formations.

Such a trip will offer you a plethora of opportunities for photographs as you pass by secluded coves and other interesting locations. Some trips may also offer you the chance to moor up in a quiet cove and enjoy a nice swim.

Once in the Lagos marina you’ll see an even larger array of sea boats and the lovely coastal town of Lagos stretching beyond. These day-trips will also mean that you have an afternoon at your disposal to explore the area of Lagos a bit, and maybe see if you’d like to dedicate a few more trips here once you’re back in Alvor.
