You might have heard of the Algarve and you might have heard of Porto, everybody talks about them, but one place that you probably haven’t heard of is Alvor, and that’s a pity, but we’ll fix that right away and start talking about things to do in Alvor so that you can get better acquainted with the city and the overall region.
You can find Alvor in the western part of the Algarve region, and this makes it a great headquarters, or base, from which you can explore one of the loveliest areas that Portugal has to offer.
The city is set at the mouth of the Alvor estuary which means that it features the Atlantic Ocean on one side and a freshwater lagoon on the other, but that’s just the basic ideea of the landscape, there are plenty of things to do in Alvor and we’ll talk about them in turn.
The beaches in Alvor are a great example of the best beaches in the Algarve region as a whole. They’re a mix of wide golden sand stretches and cosy secluded coves, on occasion located in the shade of towering cliffs and organic rock formations. We talk about many of the Alvor beaches in other articles on this site.
Alvor has a plethora of restaurants to choose from, offering a great array of dishes and cuisines. They also cater to a wide range of budgets as well. Those who love fish and sea-food – and the Algarve is a great place for you by the way – can find harbor-front fish restaurants that serve lobster monk fish and many other specialties, and then you can also find some establishment that offer a range of great traditional Portuguese and European offerings.
Also you can find near the city a lot of golf courses in Alvor, Portimao or Lagos to choose from where you can spend an entire day to play golf with your friends.
Alvor is a great place to explore both in an urban sense as well as a geographical one. You can benefit greatly from some Alvor car hire or Alvor transfers services if you want to take as much advantage of the city and the region it is located in by going for day trips around the city to explore the ecosystem of the Alvor river.
